O for Opportunity

“You educate a man; you educate a man. You educate a woman; you educate a generation.” -Brigham Young

“Sewing Hope for Armenia” is about an opportunity to make refugee women’s and their families’ life better. Each of us goes through hardships and what we need, is an opportunity to rise again after falling. Having lost their loved ones, their homes, jobs and normal lives, but not hope, these women came to us with a desire to learn and change their future. And we gave them this opportunity.

Our inspiration was Diana Abgar, who was the first Armenian woman diplomat and one of the first women to have ever been appointed in any diplomatic post in the twentieth century. She was a real politician, who had never been in her homeland, but did everything for it.
She had lived in Japan most of her life. Through Abgar’s efforts, Japan became one of the first nations to recognize the new republic’s independence and thanks to her activism she became the first Armenian diplomat and Armenian Consulate of Japan.

Diana was a person who helped every Armenian in a difficult situation, displaced people, who didn’t know the local language and customs. Often, the representatives of the American and English authorities allocated aid at Mrs. Abgar’s request so that the refugees could reach America or England. Often at her request, the steamship companies offered tickets at great discounts.

She was given an opportunity to be a politician and help people, and she had created many opportunities for Armenians to overcome hardships.

That is why giving an opportunity is very important as it makes life continue.
